Citizen App plays a major role in alerting individuals on the impending danger happening so as to prevent them from getting involved. The app’s aim is to ensure that the individuals avoid the areas where a disaster is happening and allow the police to handle the situation.
They originally started as “Vigilante” in 2016 but was ultimately pulled thanks to accusations of promoting vigilantism. The app was rebranded and used to offer caution by warning citizens of dangerous incidents in their area, often before the police have responded to them. This puts the focus on avoiding harm instead of rushing into it. Usage of the app has made headlines, including a kidnapped boy being recovered thanks to an alert.
In this manner, casualties are reduced and fatalities that were more likely to occur will be controlled. It has several features which make it achieve the intended mission. A team established helps in sourcing, screening, filtering, and disbursing the information to individuals near the areas where an incident is happening.
The functionality of Citizen App is similar to the police scanner app. To use this Citizen App one has to allow access to their location and contacts. Allowing access, the app will be able to give alerts based on where one is located, also sending videos of the incident to an individual contact list. It also alerts individuals about the Covid-19 by giving them information on the possible chances when they may have been exposed to the virus.
The videos and updates alert regarding one’s areas are received by tapping the lightning bolt symbol then the global at the top of the screen is hit, finally selection of the city area is carried out. On clicking on the tap indicating more information, the videos present at that time will start to play automatically, but in case no video is found, one will be redirected to map where the incident occurs. Switching between the map and video is done by simply tapping the symbols under the video.
The citizen app allows the users to leave comments, emoji reactions, and share the incident through various social platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, twitters, telegrams, and copying directly to the clipboard.
